Chick-fil-A Raises Funds for Families Struck by Tragedy
Zachery Murdock was just 16 when his car collided head-on with another vehicle driven by Frank Strickland, 32, reverend of St. Paul’s Church of God in Lumberton, N.C. Tragically, both men died in the Feb. 2 collision. The local Chick-fil-A in Lumberton, where Zachery worked, held a fundraiser recently in honor of both men.
Strickland’s wife and four children were in his car and, although they survived, his wife broke both of her arms and one of his daughter’s broke both of her legs.
"The Murdocks and the Stricklands are in the healing process, but that process will take time,” said Mark Morse, owner/Operator of the Chick-fil-A in Lumberton. "Because of the seriousness of the situation, each family has incurred significant financial costs. I feel it is our responsibility to do what we can for these families, especially because Zach was my team member and the Stricklands are my new friends.”
On Feb. 19, Mark set aside 20 percent of every meal sold at the restaurant to give to the families; he also accepted donations. "We’ve prayed, we’ve cried, we’ve laughed, and we’ve remembered,” Mark said. "But it’s time to put action to words. All I’m asking you to do is come grab a meal like you normally would.”
The community of Lumberton came out in full force, packing the restaurant with one of its busiest days since its grand opening in August, 2012, when Zach began work as one of its first team members. "Zach was a fantastic and bright young man who was studying to become an engineer,” Mark said. "He was a hard worker, known for his smile and great personality.”
Several prayer vigils were held at Mark’s restaurant, and he had an opportunity to meet both families. "Because the Stricklands don’t have their sole provider anymore, the Murdocks generously offered to give the family their half of the proceeds,” said Mark, who presented the Stricklands with a check for approximately $3,500.
"We only have 23,000 people in Lumberton with 14 percent unemployment,” Mark said. "Yet people came out in droves to support these families. It was truly heart-warming.”
