Chick-fil-A Partners with Miles for Hope to Promote Exercise, Healthy Eating
In an effort to promote exercise and healthy eating habits, the Chick-fil-A in Waxahachie, Texas, hosted a Spirit Day fundraiser to benefit Miles for Hope, a health initiative of the Hope Clinic in Waxahachie.
Twenty percent of every healthy kids' meal purchased on Feb. 21 went to support Miles for Hope, as did 15 percent of all other Chick-fil-A sales. The healthy kids' option included grilled chicken nuggets instead of fried, with a fruit cup instead of waffle fries.
Miles for Hope helps raise awareness about the Hope Clinic, whose doctors volunteer their time and services to help people in the community who are uninsured or can't afford healthcare. They not only provide medical care, but dental, orthopedic and behavioral health care services as well.
As part of Miles for Hope, children commit to walking certain distances to raise money for specific items, such as diabetes testing kits and other desperately-needed items. Students and nurses from seven local elementary schools participated in various walks and in the Spirit Day fundraiser at Chick-fil-A.
Miles for Hope promotes physical activity as a way to control weight and reduce the risk of heart attacks, Type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Miles for Hope offers an eight-week ‘journey' designed to promote the increased activity of its participants, while offering education and motivation for healthy, active lifestyles.
"Promoting healthy eating is big in schools right now," says Laure Henthorn, marketing director of the Chick-fil-A in Waxahachie. "Much of our event raised money for diabetes and other illnesses that can be curtailed hopefully by eating healthy. That's why we're so excited about the grilled nuggets and healthy choices we have; we're really trying to promote them in the community. We want to encourage people to make those good choices."
