Regular physical activity in children and adolescents promotes good health and wellness. Physical activity leads to higher levels of cardio respiratory fitness and stronger muscles. Also youth who are physically active typically have lower body fat, their bones are stronger, and they may have reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Strive for 60 minutes of activity each day. The activity doesn't have to be done all at one time; you can break up activities throughout the day that total to 60 minutes. Here are some ideas for family fitness fun:
- Running on the playground, playing tag or jogging around a track or neighborhood
- Sports such as soccer, basketball or tennis
- Roller skating or rollerblading
- Dancing or aerobics
- Swimming
- Bike riding
- Walking briskly or hiking
- Jumping rope
- Helping to clean up the house or yard
