Be The Match
For the past three years the Chick-fil-A Hurst in Hurst TX has hosted a blood and bone marrow registry drive in honor of my daughter Hallie Bea. Hallie has a rare bone marrow failure called Diamond Blackfan Anemia. Her bone marrow doesn't produce red blood cells which are essential for survival. There are less than 800 children worldwide diagnosed with DBA. Hallie is alive today because of blood transfusions and steroids, she has been on the bone marrow registry waiting to find her match for 5 years now. When Debbie and Steve, owners of Chick-fil-A in Hurst, heard our story they started doing yearly drives in Hallie's honor. They allow the Carter Blood mobile to take up precious hard to find parking spaces in their lot and they allow Be the Match a table to set up registering people for the national bone marrow registry. Now this is way more than expected, but they go above and beyond offering a free Chick-fil-A Chicken sandwich to anyone who gives blood or joins the registry. They also advertise this long before the day of in order to draw in a huge crowd. This year 52 people donated blood. Their selfless service to our family is more than a blessing. My eyes fill with tears just thinking how they have embraced our family with love, support, and hugs! Every time we go to Hurst Chick-fil-A it's like going home. They love my children. They fill their little bellies with chicken, their hands with stuffed cows, and they take the time to hold and love on them. And for one day, each year, they are heroes saving not only my daughter's life, but countless others who need blood transfusions and bone marrow matches. Steve, Debbie and the whole Chick-fil-A team is a blessing to our family and the community of Hurst.
