Remarkable Futures Scholarship Winner Rudy Villegas
Chick-fil-A Team Member and scholarship recipient uses obstacles as a doorway to help others
Like many who grow up along the U.S.-Mexico border, Rodolfo “Rudy” Villegas has always kept a foot in both worlds — staying true to his cultural roots while cherishing the doors that have opened for him as a first-generation American.
“It’s a blessing to have been born here,” Villegas said of his hometown of Eagle Pass, Texas. “I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn't for all the opportunities to further my education.
I know that if I had lived on the other side, everything would be a little more difficult.”
The “other side” is Piedras Negras, Mexico, from which Rudy’s parents emigrated in hopes of a better future for their family. Still, they juggled multiple jobs and struggled financially while raising Villegas and his three younger siblings.
Then there was the language barrier. By the time Villegas reached kindergarten, his school wanted to hold him back to give him more time to learn English. Believing her son could work through this, Martha Villegas chose to keep him in his grade.
“It made me ashamed and sad sometimes being around other students who knew the language,” Villegas said. “But the support of my parents allowed me to rise up and overcome.”
For Villegas, that meant making the honor roll and landing in a gifted and talented program. He’d eventually volunteer as a teacher’s aide to help other young children with similar barriers.
Working hard from an early age
Villegas didn’t stop at language. As a kid, he looked for opportunities to help out his family financially by taking small jobs around the neighborhood — selling chips and candy at school, cutting grass and helping his grandfather paint houses.
On Villegas’ 16th birthday, he applied for a job at Chick-fil-A® Eagle Pass.
“I knew that Rudy had a different character when he chose to interview with me on his birthday instead of celebrating,” Operator Juan Garza said. “I noticed his motivation was his family, his education and his dedication to make a positive impact.”
Villegas was hired on the spot.
Driven to succeed
In just three years, Villegas quickly rose through the ranks from Team Member to now Director. The desire to work hard and drive results was the gas to Villegas’ motivational engine.
“If you look at the rise of potential young leaders, there’s always a hunger. Rudy showed grit and a willingness to always want to take on more,” Garza said.
One way he showed determination came with a sales contest through the Chick-fil-A® App. Villegas called Juan’s wife, Jacqueline, who serves as the marketing director, every day with ideas on how to promote mobile ordering.
“He owned it!,” Jacqueline Garza said. “Rudy always wants to do the best job he can.”
That dedication — to both work and school — means Villegas spends a lot of time away from his home, so the Garzas have become like a second family to him.
“I have looked at Juan as more as a father figure because, besides being a businessman, he has been a mentor," Villegas said. “He has been that person who has been there for my family, especially for me.”
A life-changing moment
In February 2019, Villegas was invited to attend Chick-fil-A’s annual conference under the guise that he was simply participating in a Team Member panel. Villegas brought his mother, Martha — the first time either of them had been on an airplane.
At the conference, Chick-fil-A Chairman and CEO Dan Cathy announced Villegas and 11 other Team Members would receive a $25,000 True Inspiration Scholarship. Villegas was overcome with emotion.
“It was a huge deal,” Villegas said. “I felt very grateful because Chick-fil-A has not only allowed me to fulfill a dream to be able to pay for school, but they allowed my mother to fulfill her dreams.”
A vision for the future
Villegas is the first in his family to learn English and is on pace to be the first to graduate with a four-year degree — so he understands the value of education. With the Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Scholarship, he’s now studying to become a teacher so he can help other students who have struggled like he did.
“We are very proud of him because everything he pursues, he achieves. For me, I have pride because he is a Latino who had dreams and we thank God they have come true,” Villegas’ mother said.
The True Inspiration Scholarship is part of Chick-fil-A’s Remarkable Futures initiative. In 2019, more than 6,000 Team Members received $15.3 million in scholarships. Since 1973, nearly 53,000 Chick-fil-A Team Members have been awarded $75 million in scholarships.

Al igual que muchos que crecen a lo largo de la frontera entre los Estados Unidos y México, Rodolfo "Rudy" Villegas siempre ha tenido un pie en ambos mundos — manteniéndose fiel a sus raíces culturales y al mismo tiempo apreciando las puertas que se le han abierto como estadounidense de primera generación.
"Es una bendición haber nacido aquí", dijo Villegas sobre su ciudad natal de Eagle Pass, Texas. “No estaría donde estoy ahora si no fuera por todas las oportunidades de seguir con mi educación. Sé que si hubiera vivido del otro lado, todo sería un poco más difícil ".
El "otro lado" es Piedras Negras, México, de donde los padres de Rudy emigraron con la esperanza de un futuro mejor para su familia. Aún así, hicieron malabares con múltiples trabajos mientras criaban a Villegas y sus tres hermanos menores.
También existía la barrera del idioma. Cuando Villegas llegó al kindergarten, su escuela quería que repitiera el año para darle más tiempo para aprender inglés. Sabiendo que su hijo podría superar esto, sus padres decidieron mantenerlo en su grado.
"Me daba pena y tristeza a veces estar alrededor de estudiantes que supieran el lenguaje", dijo Villegas. "Pero el apoyo de mis padres me permitió seguir adelante y vencer las expectativas.
Resultó que Villegas logró la lista de honor y acabó en un programa para estudiantes de altas capacidades y talentos. Eventualmente se ofrecería como asistente de maestro para ayudar a otros niños pequeños con barreras similares.
Trabajando duro desde temprana edad
Villegas no se detuvo con solo superar la barrera del idioma. Desde niño buscaba oportunidades para ayudar financieramente a su familia tomando pequeños trabajos en su barrio — vendiendo papas fritas y dulces en su escuela, cortando hierba y ayudando a su abuelo a pintar casas.
En el mismo día que cumplió 16 años, Villegas solicitó un trabajo en Chick-fil-A Eagle Pass.
"Sabía que Rudy tenía un carácter diferente cuando eligió entrevistar en su cumpleaños en vez de celebrarlo", dijo el operador Juan Garza. "Me fijé que su motivación era su familia, su educación y su dedicación para tener un impacto positivo".
Villegas fue contratado inmediatamente.
Impulsado a triunfar
En solo tres años, Villegas ascendió rápidamente desde Team Member a ahora Director. El deseo de trabajar duro y obtener resultados fue el gas del motor motivacional de Villegas.
“Si nos fijamos en el ascenso de potenciales líderes jóvenes, siempre hay hambre. Rudy mostró agallas y una disposición a querer siempre asumir más ”, dijo Garza.
Una forma en que mostró determinación fue con un concurso de ventas a través de la Chick-fil-A® App. Villegas llamó a la esposa de Juan, Jacqueline — quien trabaja como Directora de Marketing — todos los días con ideas sobre cómo promover las órdenes móviles.
"Rudy siempre quiere hacer el mejor trabajo posible", dijo Jacqueline Garza.
Esa dedicación, tanto al trabajo como a la escuela, significa que Villegas pasa mucho tiempo fuera de su casa, por lo que la pareja de Juan y Jacqueline se ha convertido en una segunda familia para él.
"He visto a Juan más como una figura paterna porque, además de ser un hombre de negocios, ha sido un mentor", dijo Villegas. "Ha sido esa persona que ha estado ahí para mi familia, especialmente para mí".
El momento que cambio su vida

"Fue una gran cosa", dijo Villegas. "Me siento muy agradecido porque Chick-fil-A no solo me ha dado la oportunidad de cumplir mi sueño de poder tener mi colegio pagado, sino que también ayudó a mi madre cumplir sus sueños.
Una visión para el futuro
Villegas es el primero en su familia en aprender inglés y está en camino a ser el primero en graduarse con un título universitario — por lo que comprende el valor de la educación. Con la beca ‘True Inspiration’ de Chick-fil-A, ahora está estudiando para convertirse en maestro para poder ayudar a otros estudiantes que han tenido dificultades como él.
“Estamos muy orgullosos de él porque cada cosa que él se propone, lo logra. Es para mí un orgullo porque es un latino que tuvo sueños y gracias a Dios que se le han hecho realidad”, dijo la madre de Villegas.
La beca ‘True Inspiration’ es parte de la iniciativa de Remarkable Futures de Chick-fil-A. En el 2019, más de 6,000 Team Members recibieron más de 15 millones de dólares en becas. Desde 1973, casi 53,000 Team Members de Chick-fil-A han recibido 75 millones en becas.
