Chick-fil-A is receiving top honors for its healthy menu innovations. Publisher, Food News Media awarded Chick-fil-A its inaugural HALO award for 2014. The award honors restaurant chains that “have made meaningful contributions to a healthy, active lifestyle for consumers.”

Chick-fil-A was awarded for the restaurant chain’s new grilled chicken entrees – the Chick-fil-A® Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Chick-fil-A® Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich and Chick-fil-A® Grilled Nuggets. The lineup of grilled chicken entrees gives the chain one of the most nutritious and expansive grilled menus across the quick-service industry.

To make the menu enhancement possible, Chick-fil-A invested seven years of testing and more than $50 million to reinvent its grilled chicken recipe. The largest portion of the investment came as the company worked with Garland Grills to create a proprietary grill. This grill sears chicken perfectly on cast-iron grates like it was cooked on a backyard grill, only faster.

“We started with a mission to create a best-in-class grilled sandwich, and after testing 1,200-plus recipes, we landed on a taste so remarkable that we decided to extend the flavor into a full grilled line,” said David Farmer, Chick-fil-A’s vice president of product strategy and development. “Our previous grilled entrees were good, but not remarkable. We wanted a grilled chicken recipe that is just as ‘craveable’ as our original Chick-fil-A® Chicken Sandwich,” Farmer said.

Both QSR and FSR have regularly covered the healthy, active lifestyle and how restaurant chains are addressing it. In 2014 Food News Media took that coverage to the next level by launching the HALO Awards and began accepting entries in February. The stated purpose of the awards initiative was two-fold: to give chain restaurants that have made health-related contributions the widespread recognition they deserve, and to spur further health-related innovations among restaurant chains.

The winners and honorable mentions were recognized during a ceremony held on October 14 at the Georgia World Congress Center as part of the Atlanta Foodservice Expo. “It was great to see the passion exhibited not only by the restaurant chains when they accepted their awards, but also the enthusiasm of those in attendance,” says Greg Sanders, group publisher of Food News Media. “There is real, concrete interest in pursuing this line of business in the chain restaurant industry.”

Honorees were chosen by a panel of restaurant, nutrition, and public health experts, including Dr. David Katz, MD, MPH, FACPM, FACP, director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center; Anita Jones-Mueller, founder and president of Healthy Dining; Sam Oches, editor of QSR magazine; Connie Gentry, editor of FSR magazine; and Sanders.
