Supporting students beyond the classroom with leadership and career development

Mentorship is key to shaping future leaders, and with the start of its first-ever Student Leadership Development Program, Morris Brown College is paving the way for generations to come. In partnership with Chick-fil-A, Inc., the Atlanta-based HBCU celebrated the inaugural launch of the program this September.

This exciting initiative marks a significant step forward in the long-standing collaboration between the college and Chick-fil-A, Inc., which began in 2021 when the company pledged $500,000 to support the college’s re-accreditation efforts. After Morris Brown regained its accreditation, Chick-fil-A continued its support with another $500,000 in 2023—solidifying its commitment not just financially, but through meaningful career and leadership development opportunities for students.

Inside the Student Leadership Development Program
The Student Leadership Development Program’s inaugural cohort includes 12 student leaders from Morris Brown College, selected based on their leadership, academic performance and involvement on campus. Upon selection, each participant was matched with a Chick-fil-A, Inc. Staff mentor and they will meet bi-weekly to discuss leadership, goal setting, career preparation and more.

These meetings will be a mix of virtual and in-person sessions, with some taking place at the Chick-fil-A Support Center: Buffington in Atlanta, where students can get a behind-the-scenes look at what it is like to work for the company. Throughout the program, participants will also have the opportunity to refine their resumes, hone their leadership style and participate in workshops, career days and even a unique intern –for-a-day experience.

One of the program’s highlights is the chance for students to see mentors who reflect their own experiences and aspirations, as the program matches each student with a professional who has walked a similar path, many of whom are HBCU alumni themselves. Mentor pairings were carefully made based on career goals, academic background, the skills each student wanted to develop and more.

Kicking Off the Program
To officially launch the program, Chick-fil-A and Morris Brown hosted a celebratory event, including a mentor matching ceremony where students met their Chick-fil-A Staff mentors for the first time. The event also featured a panel discussion on the benefits of mentorship and a lunch.

"To me, this Student Leadership Development Program is not just about our students learning how to find and navigate their professional path, it is also about them having access to resources - like mentorship to assist them in their journey,” said Dr. Ivy Wood, Director of Community Standards & Career Development. “Everyone succeeds when both the students and their mentors invest their time into this program."
