Local Chick-fil-A Owner-Operators address food insecurity in their communities through the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program and other efforts

In Charlotte, addressing food insecurity is an issue that local Chick-fil-A Owner-Operators take to heart, and their efforts often inspire other Chick-fil-A restaurants. From annual partnerships with professional sports teams to donating surplus food to their neighbors in need, they are redefining how Chick-fil-A restaurants can engage in communities to combat hunger.

The impact of Chick-fil-A Shared Table in Charlotte
The Chick-fil-A Shared Table® food donation program empowers Chick-fil-A restaurants across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as well as in Canada, to combat hunger and make a lasting impact in their local communities.

Over the last 8 years, Charlotte-area Chick-fil-A restaurants have collectively helped create more than 562,000 meals for those in need in partnership with local nonprofits, while simultaneously diverting surplus food from landfills.

In addition to working with a variety of local nonprofits, many Charlotte-area Restaurants also support two long-standing partners: FeedNC and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

FeedNC
Since 2018, FeedNC has worked with Chick-fil-A Mooresville and Chick-fil-A Talbert Road to further its mission of combating hunger and food insecurity. The partnership helps provide daily meals through Donoghue’s Open Door, a dining program that invites neighbors to enjoy a free meal, served around community tables at FeedNC.

In 2023, Chick-fil-A, Inc. helped further the brand’s impact in Charlotte—presenting FeedNC with a surprise $25,000 donation and hosting a cooking demonstration and tasting event on FeedNC’s campus to raise awareness about hunger-fighting solutions among community leaders.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina
Other Charlotte-area Chick-fil-A restaurants have supported the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina for over 15 years, raising $100,000 in 2023 alone through two key initiatives:

  • Gather to Give fundraiser: Each November, 100% of the proceeds from Chick-fil-A® Nugget Trays are donated to the food bank over the course of two weeks.
  • “Assist Hunger” initiative: Participating Restaurants donate 10 meals for every Charlotte Hornets assist, contributing over 2,000 meals during the 2023-2024 NBA season.

Soon, in celebration of Chick-fil-A Supply’s newest distribution center in the Charlotte area, the company will donate $25,000 to Second Harvest to further its commitment to fight hunger.

A new ally in Charlotte
While FeedNC and Second Harvest Food Bank are long-standing Chick-fil-A Shared Table partners, Cooperative Christian Ministry is a new addition to the program. Aiming to help people in Cabarrus and Southern Rowan countries transition from crisis to restoration, the nonprofit is in the backyard of Chick-fil-A Carolina Mall, which started donating surplus food to the organization in February 2024.

Since then, the Restaurant has created over 1,000 meals through the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program, collected weekly by volunteers to be donated to the organization’s food pantry network.

Matt Rice, local Owner-Operator of Chick-fil-A Carolina Mall, sees the partnership as an opportunity to transform surplus food into meaningful community support.

“The Cooperative Christian Ministry and Chick-fil-A share a commitment to giving back to those in need,” Matt said. “Their mission goes beyond just providing meals—they’re dedicated to equipping people with resources, fostering perseverance and restoring hope.”

As Matt's relationship with the nonprofit grows, he looks forward to deepening his Restaurant’s impact on the community.

“We aspire to be our community’s most caring company,” Matt said. “This is a small, tangible way that we are moving in that direction.”
