In 45+ years of service she made 650K pies, touched countless lives
It is with sad, but grateful hearts that Chick-fil-A celebrates the life of Zelma Calhoun, affectionately known as “Miss Zelma” or more frequently, “the pie lady.”
In 1954, Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy hired her at the Chick-fil-A Dwarf House® restaurant in Hapeville, Ga. (formerly known as the Dwarf Grill) while she was in high school. Learning from Truett himself, she eventually became the lead pie maker and the second of three pie makers in the Dwarf House’s history. During more than 45 years of service in the restaurant, Miss Zelma made more than 650,000 pies – and touched countless lives.
From greeting each customer with a smile to baking each pie to perfection, Miss Zelma brought joy and a dedication to serving others to both the restaurant and the community.
