5 Ways Chick-fil-A and Local Operators Are Tackling Hunger

September 14, 2026

How local Owner-Operators are turning surplus food into millions of meals in their local communities.

1. Turning Restaurant Surplus into Meals Through the Chick-fil-A Shared Table® Program
The Chick-fil-A Shared Table® program represents an intentional, proactive choice made by local Owner-Operators to care for their neighborhoods. Rather than letting wholesome, unsold food go unused, participating restaurants carefully pack items such as chicken, salads, biscuits and fruit each week.

Through Food Donation Connection, Chick-fil-A local Owner-Operators are paired directly with local non-profits, soup kitchens and shelters on the front lines of fighting hunger in their hometowns. These partner organizations repurpose the donated ingredients into nourishing meals for those who need them most. Thanks to this grassroots commitment from local Owner-Operators and their Team Members, the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program has helped create more than 50 million meals for local communities since 2012.

2. Supporting Local and National Hunger Relief Organizations
To ensure long-term, systemic support, Chick-fil-A, Inc. provides direct financial assistance to non-profit organizations focused on increasing food access:

  • Grand Opening Giving: With every new restaurant opening in the United States, Chick-fil-A, Inc. donates $25,000 to a local Feeding America partner food bank. Since 2020, this initiative has provided more than $20 million in grants to regional food networks.
  • True Inspiration Awards®: Each year, the Chick-fil-A True Inspiration Awards® program delivers annual grants to impactful local non-profits, including organizations demonstrating exceptional care through food in their communities.
  • Targeted Investments: During Hunger Action Month in September 2025, Chick-fil-A, Inc. invested an additional $4 million to bolster local hunger-relief efforts across the U.S.

3. Serving Communities Through Hands-On Volunteering
Care extends beyond financial and food donations. Throughout the year, local Owner-Operators, restaurant Team Members and Chick-fil-A, Inc. Staff actively contribute their time, talent and energy to hunger-focused organizations. Whether organizing volunteer shifts at regional food banks, sorting donations, or participating in large-scale meal-packing events, teams work side-by-side with community leaders to support local relief operations.

4. Responding with Care in Times of Crisis
When unexpected natural disasters strike, quick and reliable access to nourishing food becomes critical. Following crises, Chick-fil-A collaborates closely with disaster relief partners—including Convoy of Hope, the American Red Cross, and other emergency organizations—to deliver warm meals, essential supplies and on-the-ground support tailored to the immediate needs of affected communities.

5. Recovering Wholesome Protein Through the Supply Chain
Chick-fil-A is also innovating upstream to recover nourishing food before it ever reaches a restaurant. Through an active protein repack pilot connected to the Chick-fil-A Supply® distribution center in Cartersville, Georgia, safe frozen chicken that cannot be shipped to restaurants in its original packaging is redirected to a qualified food bank partner.

At the food bank, the usable product is repacked for distribution to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. This pilot serves as a learning model for how supply-chain food recovery can be expanded to additional distribution centers with the proper cold storage, food safety, and transportation frameworks in place.
